The city of Makarska, developed in a natural harbor closed to the southeast by Cape Osejava, and to the northwest by the Sveti Petar peninsula, south of city Dividir.
It is one of the famous tourist destinations on the Croatian coast for active types, who base themselves here to take advantage of the nearby hiking, climbing, paragliding, mountain biking, windsurfing and swimming opportunities attra due to its natural and climatic characteristics.
There’s a lovely long waterfront promenade and a pretty limestone centre that turns peachy orange at sunset.
The symbol of Makarska is a city pebble beach, stretching over two kilometres, enveloped in lively bars and clubs.
Makarska’s Franciscan monastery has gone through several transformations since it was first built in the 15th century. The building’s been burnt down and rebuilt a number of times, with its baroque bell tower built in 1715. The monastery was turned into a mosque for a time when the area was under Ottoman occupation. Today it’s home to a large library with many rare and valuable books as well as an art gallery. Take a peek behind the altar to see the magnificent mosaic.
The Shell Museum within the grounds of the monastery has an eye-catching collection of some 3,000 seashells from around the world on display.
